Adika Counseling Anxiety EMDR Depression Rockville, Maryland

Carrie Cornwell, LCPC

Providing virtual therapy to Maryland residents only. Accepts CareFirst/Anthem/BlueCross BluShield, United HealthCare and Cigna Insurance only.

Clients come to me looking for individual therapy for trauma, neurodivergence and Autism Spectrum Disorder specifically, depression and mood disorders, anxiety, personality disorders and substance dependence and substance abuse. Additionally, I work with depression generally and around  relationship issues including emotional abandonment and neglect, codependency, trauma including mental, emotional and physical abuse, work stress and burnout as well performance anxiety ("imposter syndrome"), and transitions like marriage, having a child, a new job.

I use dialectical behavioral therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy (to work toward solving problems and learning skills), trauma focused therapy and psychodynamic therapy (to increase a client's self-awareness). I use therapeutic approaches that support the mental and emotional well being of BIPOC, Latino/Latina and LGBTQ+ identities. I use trauma informed care to help with dissociation, trigger response and associations that lead to unhealthy functioning, expecting catastrophic outcomes and more. I use CBT to teach recovering addicts to find connections between thoughts, feelings and actions and increase awareness.

We work through cognitively and emotionally processing, replacing and adapting cognitive, emotional and behavioral patterns that cause, maintain or exacerbate distress related to anxiety, depression PTSD and OCD among others. I guide clients through distress tolerance as well and body and emotion regulation in response to stress. My integrative treatment approach allows for holistically attunement and attending to the body, brain, mind, and emotions. I take social factors, such as race, class, culture, and gender, into account. My openness and validation helps clients to explore and process painful and difficult experiences related to identity, personality, beliefs, values and personhood. Beyond cognitive, emotional and behavioral change, my clients feel less vulnerable in relationships, are more compassionate and accepting of themselves, develop the ability to be self aware, have profound insight into the adaptive purpose of their maladaptive patterns and have greater compassion for self and others.

As I incorporate art, body work and mindfulness techniques to help regulate the nervous system, clients experience greater relaxation, interpersonal effectiveness, attention control, working memory functioning and lessening of distressing thoughts.

I have a fun and engaging personality and approach therapy with genuine curiosity and authenticity. I listen intently to clients and provide a safe environment for reflection, processing, and acceptance.

I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and am credentialed by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).
