Matthew Waybright, LGPC

Accepting Maryland residents for virtual mental health counseling.

Accepts Aetna, United HealthCare, Cigna/EverNorth and CareFirst/Anthem/BlueCross and BlueShield.

I provide virtual counseling focused on the complexities and nuances that come with being a man in today’s society. More specifically, I work with men to gain insight into anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and substance use and their lived experiences related to career, stage-of-life, relationships, family life, transitions, identity and personal, pressures and roles, societal and cultural stressors.  I’m motivated to provide a supportive environment where men feel safe to express and explore their vulnerabilities and experiences that impact their wellness and existence.

Through a collaborative and systemic process, I work with my clients to process their experiences both cognitively and emotionally using evidence-based, developmentally appropriate and culturally focused approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing and a person centered oriented approach which seek to guide clients into understanding the function of their cognitive, emotional, behavioral and relational patterns. I am of the mindset that all of our ways of being–avoidance, overeating, hyperindependence, isolation, rumination, people pleasing, worrying, substance use– serve a purpose and encourage my clients to be accountable without being critical or judgemental. The beginning of our work together is focused on learning, the how, when, why and how of you before we begin to move toward behavioral change.

My role in therapy is to ask guiding questions, challenge an incongruence in order to help clients work though repeating unhelpful patterns, guide them in exploring choices, reframe thoughts and partner with them in identifying, implementing and assessing actionable steps as they explore the totality of their thoughts, emotions, desires and past in order that they can resolve any trauma, decrease or eliminate any distressing symptoms and confront any tensions within themselves or others.

My clients describe and experience me as flexible, lighthearted, direct, empowering, compassionate and supportive.

My training in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from my work at University of Baltimore Career Center has provided me with clinical knowledge and hands-on training to administer assessments, select a clinical diagnosis, engage clients in treatment planning and collaborate with clients to explore, understand and implement coping strategies to help manage or eliminate mental health disorders and psychological stress.

I am providing supervised clinical mental health counseling with designation  as a licensed graduate professional counselor (LGPC) from the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.
